DESCRIPTION
World Historical Gazetteer (WHG) is an open-source, open-content platform for linked historical place data, based at the University of Pittsburgh's World History Center. The platform indexes over 3.4 million place names spanning human history from the Bronze Age to the 21st century, drawn from 70+ published datasets and collections. WHG enables users to discover places through web interface and API, build gazetteers using the Gazetteer Workbench with reconciliation tools (Getty TGN, Wikidata, GeoNames), and teach with historical geography lesson plans. The platform uses Linked Places Format (LPF), adding temporal extensions to GeoJSON. The reconciliation index contains 13+ million records from GeoNames and Wikidata, and users can create Dataset Collections and Place Collections for publication.
