Description
READCHINA was a research project led by Lena Henningsen at the University of Freiburg (2018–2023) investigating the politics of reading in the PRC, with a primary focus on the Cultural Revolution era. Its core output is ReadAct, an open-access relational database documenting over 1,000 individual reading acts drawn from autobiographical sources, recording what individuals read during the Cultural Revolution alongside metadata on agents, works, and spatial context. The dataset is openly available on GitHub; the project site also includes resources on hand-copied books (shouchaoben), comics, and scholarly publications.
